Some of the more fun things to do with a Night Medallion Let's examine the Night Medallion first: Night Medallion; Item; Imperial-Obsidian; Rare 0F 0C 6G 3Fo Unique. The Night Medallion may only be attached to a Kolat or Ninja. Night Medallion adds +2 to every number that appears on the Personality's card. (Clarification: +2 only applies to numerals, not spelled out numbers like "four".) (Erratta: Does not apply to copied abilities. Adds to the actual value, not the number. -1 becomes +1, not -3.) The Idea: while the Medallion is all fine and good and lets you make Bayushi Aramoro a 4/5 with 3 personal honor and 10 gold cost, or make the overlayed Akodo Kage give out +3/+3 sensei tokens, people have found more devious uses for this card by finding ways to attach the Medallion to non-ninja or kolat. The original way was to use the card Kolat Master to take control of a personality, thereby giving him the trait Kolat. If your opponent doesn't cooperate by bringing that personality out, you can use Gift of Fealty to hand over the personality, then snatch it back with your next action. Then slap on the Night Medallion and a Dragon Pearl and have fun. Another method involves giving your personality Kitsuki Kagaai's Journal, allowing her to be targeted by actions which target ninja, and take a limited action to target your personality and attach the Night Medallion. This means that you don't have to lower the personality's chi below 4, and it prevents your opponent from ambushing, assassining, or challenging your personality when she gets too annoying. It also means you can't target either. The final, and easiest method, is to use Ronin Dojo to give the personality the Ninja trait and then attach the Medallion. In all cases, for the final drop in the bucket, you can have the personality swear fealty to the Monks and give him Shiryo no Tetsuya (from Hidden Emperor 6) for another +1. Fun personalities: These assume the Medallion only, no Dragon Pearl Togashi Mitsu: +3/+3 fire tokens Naga Shugenja/Ratling Conjuror: +3F bonus to all Naga/Ratlings in play. And the Conjuror can now attatch 5G spells. Yoritomo exp: he's 8/7, +3/+4 for each weapon attached, +3F bonus to his followers, all Yoritomo's Alliance personalities get +4 in an army with him... And if he's got the Journal, he can't be sent home... Toku exp: each time he straightens, he gets +1 chi. If oathed to Monk, he can rival exp. Naka Kuro as The Kiho Master Toku exp2: can give himself +1C to give a follower +3F. Is now exp4. Isawa Tsuke exp.: 6/6 who gets +1C whenever he straightens, +5C when duelling shadowlands, duel anyone with +5C. Isawa Sze: cast a spell twice and gain +1C Togashi Rinjin: unlimited number of ranged 4 attacks Agasha Tamori: +5C when casting, 4C normally. Give him an Incense of Concentration and use Black Wind From The Soul Bayushi Areru: make straightening an expensive proposition Bayushi Kachiko: hand out +1C seduction tokens Doji Shizue: increase an opponent's honor loss by 3, gain 3 honor (according to the Pearl Edition text). Hida Yakamo oni: +3/+3 for each Crab (similar effects with Shinjo Mokasu, Yuki no Onna, et al.) Hoseki: may attach and use 3 spells. Already a ninja. Ikoma Kaoku: give everyone +3/+3 for winning Iuchi Shahai: giver her and another personality three +1/+1 tokens Kaiu Kenru: hand out 3F bonuses to all of your followers (similar effects with Sysh and Mirumoto Yukihira, but not Sunabe) Yasuki Nokastsu: All his followers get +3F (simlar effects gained by people like Naga Warlord and Necromancer) Oni no Ogon: now you can pay 5G for 3F Oni no Pekkle: bow for 3 honor. Oni no Tadaka: all Phoenix shugenja get +3C Otaku Baiken: 3F followers (similar effects with Matsu Imura, Kuni Yori, et al.) Shosuro Hametsu: his poison tokens give -4C because of different wording Takuan: even Toku becomes 3/4 (similar effects with Tchickchuk and Tsukuro) Togashi Hoshi exp: +4/+4 tattoos and he gets +1/+1 for it. Plus, he'll join Monk for 4 less. Toturi: Rehonor him after he gains the Kolat trait; he gains 4F/5C, and you gain 7 honor. He's now 10/9 now too. Ikoma Ujiaki exp: give all Lions in his army +4F (similar effects with Shahadet) Hida Tsuru: followers for 4 less Kyoso no Oni: ranged 9. Ouch. Yogo Junzo overlayed: two fear 7 and a fear 6 Hiruma Yugure: when he uses his ability, he kills everyone else in his army with less than 7 chi. Send him as an ally... Shiba Tsukune exp2: bow a shugenja to give her +4/+4. Tsuruchi: all his followers gain Ranged 3 attacks. These aren't conferred by an overlay, but... Tsuruchi exp: gives all ranged followers attached +4 strength, makes two Ranged 4 attacks and a Ranged 7. Silence: any force bonus gives him +3 additional force. Hida O-Ushi exp3: +3F for each personality with less than 7F, and more... Yoritomo Masasue exp: gains +3/+3 (already a Kolat) Hantei the 38th: Make him Hantei the 40th, 42th, or even 43th. Won't be destroyed by Hantei the 38th Falls. (Well, he will, unless you're playing a friendly game) Hitomi exp2: now exp. 4, so you can Lessons From the Past the exp 3. Yasuki Taka exp: Now worth 4 koku. Kumo: Bow someone with less than 4F. Now almost worth using. Ninja Mystic exp2: reduce chi by five, but to a minimum of 3. Probably not the combo you're looking for. Move along. Yoritomo Masasue exp: "Look, ma! I can discard my hand for a 24/24 Bonus!" Bayushi Goshiu exp2: use with Soshi Taoshi for a 4 honor hit per turn. Shadow Beast: +3F for each shadowlands personality in play, who all get +1C to a minimum of 3C. Tohaku exp: give all his followers a 4F bonus Yoshi exp2: give Kage's friends +5/+5 The following message was posted to rec.games.trading-cards.misc: Date: Fri Feb 12 17:52:05 MST 1999 From: Peter DeGlopper Subject: Re: [L5R] Yoritomo madness! Attach Shiryo no Tetsuya. Use Hoshi to tattoo him. Give him a Lion tattoo. Now use a ronin dojo to give him Ninja for a turn, then attach the Night Medallion and its Dragon Pearl twin. (I don't favor Kaagi's Journal because when attaching an item was ruled a targetted action (the only reason you can attach the medallion w/the journal) it meant that you can't give a journal'd personality items except for ninja-only items.) Net effect: +5 to every number on the card. Double bonuses from weapons. Let's see...force: 7+2+2+1+2(hoshi)+1(oath)=15 Chi: 5+2+2+1+1(Tetsuya)+1(oath)+2(Hoshi)=14 So, he'd be a 15/14, able to attach 7 weapons, each with a 6F/7C bonus - doubled. Assume 3 naginata, 3 no-dachi, Ancestral Weapons of the Mantis. (Mostly because I'm losing track of anything else.) Naginatas: +7/+9 each, doubled to +14/+18. Times 3 is +42/+54. No-dachis: +8/+8 each, doubled to +16/+16. Times 3 is +48/+48. Ancestral Weapons: +10/+11 (assuming the 4/4 versin) doubled to +20/+22. Net bonus from weapons: +110/+124. Total stats: 125/138. Double chi. Is there any way besides Retirement to have him have both Monk and Mantis alignment simultaneously and permanently, so you can attach Shiryo no Osano-Wo too? Ronin Dojo wears off, Tattooed strips away clan alignments if you're monk, so does Oath of Fealty. If you have him Retire rather than Oath of Fealty, but still use Hoshi, let's see... Force: 7-4(retirement)+2+2+1+1(Osano-Wo)+2(Hoshi) = 11 Chi: 5+2(retirement)+2+2+1+1(Tetsuya)+2(Hoshi) = 15 Still has 7 weapons, but this time they're each +7/+8, doubled. That's +14/+14 there, making him 139/152. Hardly seems worth the trouble. My point? Um...Yoritomo's the Man. -Peter
